My Plan to Lose 20 Pounds in 30 Days

By the time I publish this blog post we should have a baby here. (I publish blog posts on Tuesday and I’m writing this on Friday night, yeah party animal.)

I’ve put on some “sympathy” pounds and don’t like em. Yes it was fun putting these pounds on, but now it’s time for them to go.

I figured for a blog post I’d write HOW I’m gonna lose the 20 pounds in 30 days and then track my progress.

EATING

  • Lisa (my wife) is a healthy cook. We need to each at home more and take advantage of that cooking. Quick plug for AllRecipes.com
  • We bought the Magic Bullet blender last week. I’m gonna start each day with a smoothie of some sorts.
  • I may or may not go back on Tim Ferris’ diet (which I call The Bean Diet).

EXERCISING

  • I was getting to the pool pretty consistently until a few months ago. I’ll be going back on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Running. The verdict is still out if I actually like to run. I enjoy running with the guys I work with cause it’s 1) a good workout and 2) Good conversations. Gonna try and get back into that routine.
  • Yoga. I got some videos off iTunes and plan on doing AM and PM yoga everyday. I’m gonna get limber…even if it kills me (no it won’t).

MISC

  • Join some sort of scheduled class or team sport. I used to be pretty big into Mixed Martial Arts. I’d love to get back into that, just don’t have the time. I may have time to join a spinning class or something like that. We belong to the local YMCA, may join a class there.
  • We don’t have a TV so that should take some of the couch potato time away. Just gotta stay off this computer.

I think that’s a pretty simple plan. Doable. Not too tough. Just gotta execute. Execute these 20 pounds off my body.

My Favorite Scene from Up and Random Thoughts

I pulled my back this week. I don’t know, I think I did. All I know is that it hurts like hell.

Haven’t had much time to write lately as we are expecting our second child in the next few days. I’m gonna suck it up cause you know what, well, I’m the man. Don’t laugh.

So I have a few blog posts in the can but nothing”publish worthy” quite yet so I thought I’d post a few random thoughts and (one of) my favorite scenes from Disney’s Up.

Random Thought #1 – How long can my wife and I keep up this pace of life? 13 different foster kids, a 2 1/2 year old, a dead dog, mono, baby on the way, new roles at work…and that’s just THIS year.

Random Thought #2 – I’ve seen some bumper stickers lately that just make me shake my head sometimes. Yes abortion is wrong and yes we should stop it, but is putting a bumper sticker on your car gonna make that person who’s thinking about it stop it from happening? I doubt it. One of my favorite sayings “Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin”. Let’s try that.

Random Thought #3 – Why don’t more people use their library system? Free books, movies, video games, magazines, web surfing, and much more. Did I mention it was free?

Random Thought #4 – I really like my neighbors. We don’t live in the greatest of neighborhoods here but we got some good folks around us. Folks that look out for each other. You don’t find that everything.

And now (one of) my favorite scenes from Up.

10 Ideas: Pikes Peak Library District

pikes peak library district logo 10 Ideas: Pikes Peak Library DistrictI’m starting a new series on my blog called ‘10 Ideas’. The idea is that I give a business/person/something 10 Ideas for itself.

The first place I’m going to list 10 Ideas for is my library system, Pike’s Peak Library District. First off I LOVE our library. I mean L-O-V-E it. I just think these could do a few things to make it even more awesome.

10 Ideas: Pikes Peak Library District

  1. Newsletter – What’s happening at the library – Include a coupon for the coffee shops. Embed Video clips (YouTube) in the newsletter.
  2. Put a coffee shop in each library (only a couple have them).
  3. Make it fun to donate. Some cool change contraption thingy that kids can play with (much like Cheyenne Mountain Zoo).
  4. Leverage Meetup.com – Look for meetups around town and invite them to use your facility.
  5. Used Book Drop Off Bin – Like Goodwill…but for books. Give people tax write off.
  6. Figure a way to integrate with the school system. Mabye work with the art classes and put pieces of art that kids made all throughout the library.
  7. Free Book Room – Let folks come in and take a book…for FREE
  8. Add point system – Check out a book = 3 points, Magazine = 2 points, Movie = 1 point. When kids get a certain number of points they get a prize.
  9. App – Let me view my holds, check out books, read my digital library on my smartphone.
  10. Movie Theater – Put a movie theater in each location. Show local films.
  11. (Bonus Idea) – Delivery system for senior citizens.

So there is my first 10, well 11, Ideas. Stay tuned for more.
